CD of the week - Terry's Cafe 11

Terry's Cafe 11
mixed by
Terry Lee Brown Jnr
Release Date 23 August 2008

What a way to kick off my 'CD of the Week' section.Norman Feller has been dj-ing since 1989 in his native country of Germany and is considered to be one of the pioneers of the Tech-House sound. In 1994 he got picked up by the then fledgling label ,Plastic City, to showcase his production skills and thus Terry Lee Brown was born.

Terry's Cafe is an compilation that started back in 1997 to showcase the deep Tech-house sound that he and label partner The Timewriter has become famous for.11 releases into the series and there just seems to be no end to the quality being pushed by TLB.Starting off with a real comforting beat the vibe just seems cool ,calm and collected the whole way through ,complimented by some really cool melodic stabs popping up everywhere.Close your eyes and you might as well be floating in space........

Three tracks in the amazing Swayzak pops up in the form of their very underrated track 'Smile and Receive',a melancholy vocal floating alongside some tight punchy beats. This is what electronic music is about.........An almost tribal shuffle from up and coming producer MyMy
takes us into the open air deepness of Francois Dubois remix of Andy Cato's(Groove Armada) 'Cosmic Force'.Some cool piano stabs running alongside a nice chugging bassline to keep you warm and safe. But safety is not an option here.......

A curveball is thrown at you via Alex Flatner's 'Perfect Circle' with the equally talented Lopazz singing about running in circles (perfect circles that is) alongside an quirky baseline which is doing exactly that.......running in circles. From here on TLB keeps the listener constantly on his toes with a darker gem from unknown duo Lemos & Kreon that goes into a funkier excursion via another relatively unknown producer Cooccer. This gets followed up by the exciting Sacha Funke's 'Take a chance with me',a more stripped down track which quickly gets ripped apart by an almighty bassline cleverly mixed in by TLB ,a bassline engineered by that man Robert Babicz.Once again we are shown why Babicz is as highly regarded as he is ,remixing Pierce & Twirdy 'Cuaba' into the standout track of the compilation.

Manual Tur and El Farouki both steps up to the plate with deeper excursions before Rene Breitbarth locks you into a jacking old school techno groove with his track 'Detective'.Label mate The Timewriter makes an appearance as well with 'Limelight' ,a track that makes you wanna take your clothes off and dance in the ocean.A beautifull melody compliments the happy beats while a chugging bassline makes you wanna move in all the right places.TLB features as well with his deep and matured production 'Softpack' whilst Greg Parker's 'Casual' finishes proceedings of on anything but a casual note.An almost menacing feel to the beats makes this track the most minimal of all on here ,finishing things unresolved ......a prelude to the next installment of Terry's Cafe perhaps.

This is the sort of music you can put on after a long night out ,maybe the perfect soundtrack to a long road journey.......hell,getting ready to go out with this on will make the experience much more enjoyable. This does sound contradictary ,but that's TLB's sound. It's deep,it's chugging',it's slow and hypnotic , all rolled into one.......
